Launched in 2005 by Access Space, the L.O.S.S. Project aims to encourage and promote music created with open source software and the Linux operating system.
We have published an 11-track CD of music produced in this way, and we've also produced this website. You can download all the tracks from the CD here, and you can also buy a real copy of the CD (with a nice cover and sleeve notes) by clicking on the button to the left.
If you like this project and have downloaded and enjoyed the music for free, we'd really appreciate it if you make a donation (that's what the other button is for!)
We want to encourage you to contribute your own music here (under a Creative Commons license). But if you don't have your own music, we hope you will download and share these tracks and feed back with your views about them.
Easy: you can upload your music directly to this website. Please upload only .ogg or .mp3 files (.ogg is best!).
Please don't send us your music if it has not been produced using 100% open-source software.
We'll make an exception for music produced on Windows, Mac OS or other proprietory operating systems, only if all the actual audio production tools are open-source.
Also, bear in mind that any track you contribute must be yours, and you must be happy for us to publish it under a Creative Commons Sampling Plus license.
Underneath each individual file listing ("view full info") is a list of comments and a comment box for you to add your own. Please feel free to leave comments and enter into discussion with others. Positive or negative feedback is fine, but please be polite and constructive :)
Yes you can. All the tracks published here are released under a Creative Commons Sample Plus license that allows you to sample and modify them (for commercial or non-commercial purposes), or perform or distribute them (for solely non-commercial purposes), provided you follow some basic conditions. In fact, some artists may publish their work here under an even less restrictive license, but the Creative Commons Sample Plus will always be the minimum for this project.
See our Terms & Conditions for more information.
Our highly spiffy website is powered by the Olate Download file download system. It's a great piece of open source software and it's authors, Olate.co.uk deserve much credit and large donations :)
The website aims to be highly accessible for all users, irrespective of ability, computing platform or browsing device - though having said that, we recommend a quality, open-source user agent such as Firefox or Konqueror ;)
The LOSS project is has been launched and is maintained by Access Space. But we couldn't have done it without the support of Arts council England, Yorkshire and the PRS Foundation, and Digital South Yorkshire.
